IGTP Weekend Workshop in October

The IGTP is planning a two-day workshop on October 26-27 at the Foxlowe Arts Centre in Leek, Stafordshire. Previous IGTP workshops at Doncaster, Newark and Colchester have been very successful, so put this one in your diary now. More details will appear here and elsewhere on the website as they become available, but the plan so far is for Tim Bayley of The York Waits to direct, with the involvement of master shawm and curtal maker Eric Moulder and his band Piva.

Pipe and Tabor Festival 2013

Our friends theTaborers are holding their annual Pipe and Tabor Festival in Gloucester from 6-8 September this year. For those among our own IGTP members who are practitioners of the mysteries of the three-hole pipe, as well as others interested in this early form of one-man band, this news item links to the festival web page.

European Day of Early Music 2013

On 21 March 2013, The European Commission and the European Broadcasting Union are sponsoring the First "European Day of Early Music". Details are on the linked website - conferences, concerts etc... The date has been chosen to mark the birthday of J S Bach, born into a family of stadtpfeifers, so surely that is a good reason for the IGTP and its member bands to become involved and get out and perform somewhere on that day.

Chalemie Summer School 2013

As we contemplate the depths of winter, the first harbinger of the year to come has arrived to brighten these long winter nights. Chalemie summer school 2013 will be in Headington, Oxford from 13-18 August 2013. Music tutors will be Tim Bayley of The York Waits (shawm, curtal, recorder), Matthew Spring (lute, viol, hurdy gurdy), Katie Hodges (natural trumpet), Bill Tuck of the Baggeshotte Waytes (pipe and tabor, sackbut), Atsufumi Ujiie (recorder, pipe and tabor, percussion, keyboards) and Sarah Stowe (voice).

Dartington Summer School 2013

Week 1 of Dartington 2013 looks interesting for waits, with members of The City Musick directing courses - William Lyons directing the course on early reeds and Gawain Glenton plus Emily White leading that for early brass - cornett and sackbut.

International Waits' Festival 2014

The IGTP Trustees met recently and accepted the proposal from Simon Pickard of the Gloucester Waites to hold the Sixth Festival of the International Guild of Town Pipers in Gloucester over the "Heritage Days" weekend in September 2014. Heritage weekend is normally the second weekend of that month. Simon already has the Gloucester Civic Trust, Folk Museum and Cathedral on board. Watch the website's Festivals page as plans develop.

York Mystery Plays 2014

The Guilds of York will again bring forth the traditional wagon-based performance of the Mystery Plays in 2014, and waits are invited once again to participate. The provisional dates are July 13th and 20th. To keep the pot simmering, the Guilds of York held a conference this August on performing mystery plays.. This included a procession through the streets and wagon performances of the Creation and Noah plays at the west end of the Minster and on College Green, accompanied by the Leeds Waits on the 11th and the York Waits on the 12th. Among the conference participants were the organisers of mystery play performances in Chester, Coventry, Gloucester, Lincoln and Lichfield.

The Events page is now available for listing public events by member bands through August 2013. Email details to waits.events@btinternet.com. to make sure they are publicised by the IGTP. It is after all one of the benefits of membership. The Latest News section is also available if your member band has anything particularly newsworthy, so send such items to the same address.
